Baseball/Softball Name Six MASCAC All-Conference Players

Baseball places four on post-season honors list; Softball earns two post-season accolades

FITCHBURG, Mass. (May 4, 2011) – The Fitchburg State baseball and softball teams landed six players on the 2011 MASCAC All-Conference teams as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.

The Falcons baseball squad led the way with four, All-Conference nominations, while the Fitchburg State ladies earned a pair of conference accolades. Senior John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) led the baseball team with its lone, first-team honor, while sophomore Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), classmate Alex Teal (Malden, Mass./Malden) and freshman David Mason (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) all picked up second team honors.

For the softball team, sophomore Jill Moses (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) paved the way, earning MASCAC All-Conference first team honors, while senior Nicole Monroe (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) picked up a second team nod.

Phelan, a four-year member of the Fitchburg State baseball team, collects his second career All-Conference honor after leading the Falcons at the plate. Phelan hit a team-best .388 with a single season record 13 doubles and 43 runs scored, while adding two triples, two homeruns and 26 RBI. He was a perfect 24-of-24 on the base paths and posted all-time program marks in hits, doubles, stolen bases, runs scored and at-bats

Teal earns his second post-season MASCAC honor after being named the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2010. This season, Teal earned a spot on the All-Conference second team, tossing 55.0 innings for the Falcons with 45 K’s. He posted a 4-4 mark on the hill and registered a minimal 3.76 ERA over nine appearances.

Boice and Mason round out the Falcon baseball honorees with their first career All-Conference second team nominations. Mason had a strong rookie season for the Falcons, hitting .321 with 34 hits and 15 RBI, while Boice finished 39-of-122 (.320 BA) with 23 runs, ten doubles, one homerun and a team-high 28 RBI.

For the ladies, Jill Moses collects her first MASCAC All-Conference first team nomination after leading the Fitchburg State softball team on the offensive end. Moses sported a .321 batting average over 28 games played, totaling 25 hits and a team-best 17 runs. She led the Falcons in the power categories, posting a team-best five homeruns and 21 RBI, while adding one double, two triples and five stolen bases.

In the circle, Nicole Monroe also collects her first post-season honor, bringing home a MASCAC All-Conference second team award. Monroe was dominant on the rubber for Fitchburg State, leading the team with seven wins and 101.1 innings pitched. She fanned 71 batters over the course of the season, hurling six complete games with a 3.18 ERA.

The Fitchburg State baseball team concluded its season with an overall record of 16-18 and a 6-8 mark in the MASCAC, while the softball team finished its 2011 campaign with an overall mark of 14-23 and a 5-9 clip in the conference.
