Falcon Athletics Participates in Special Olympics, 2012

On Friday April 27th, Fitchburg State University hosted its fifth annual Special Olympics Track and Field event sponsored by the Xi  Psi chapter of Kappa Delta Pi in conjunction with the education department.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

This year, many student-athletes teamed up to volunteer at this event working with over 150 volunteers from throughout the campus community. These volunteers worked with 450 athletes from over 50 schools from North Central Massachusetts in the event that included softball toss, shot put, a variety of running events as well as Olympic Town that included many different activities such as book giveaways and other games.

This year, Fitchburg state raised over $2,500 in support of the Special Olympics and many faculty, students, and staff came down to Elliot Field to be “Fans-in-the-Stands” and show their support for hundreds of Special Olympians.
