Fred Miller - 1997 Inductee

Mr. Miller's association with Fitchburg State expands over fifty years. As an athlete, he was a star throughout his four year career. Mr. Miller led the soccer team in scoring all three seasons in which he played, and was a four year starter for the basketball team. Twice he was named captain of the soccer squad.

His career at the college began I 1942, but was suspended until the spring of 1946 as he served in World War II. While in the Army he competed in the European Championships, finished second in the long jump. At that meet he competed with Jesse Owens.

Following graduation, Mr. Miller taught junior and senior high school, then joined the FSC faculty where he taught industrial arts for 19 ? years.

In 1970 he started the women's track program at the college and continued as head coach until 1975. He also coached the Falcon soccer team for four years in the early 1970s. Mr. Miller still officiates track meets at Fitchburg State.

Mr. Miller and his wife Neysa have three children, Neysa, Lyn and Fred, and five grandchildren.
