James Amsler - 1994 Inductee

James Amsler graduated from Fitchburg State in 1943 after a brilliant career in which he earned 10 varsity letters in three sports. He excelled in basketball for four years, soccer and baseball for three years. As a sophomore basketball player Amsler averaged 11.3 points per game and was named to the All-New England Teachers College Conference (NETCC) Second Team. On the soccer field he was the team's fastest player and top playmaker, while he hit with power in baseball. In fact, he played briefly in the Red Sox organization as a minor league baseball player.

Amsler retired in 1989 after 11 years as the President of Salem State College. He was a charter appointee from the New England region to the NCAA President's Commission on Athletics, serving two terms from 1980-86. Amsler gave over 40 years of service to public higher education.
