Four Falcons Collect MASCAC All-Conference Honors

Phelan earns first team honors; Breen, Skoczylas and Callahan named to second team

FITCHBURG, Mass. (May 4, 2009) - The Fitchburg State baseball and softball teams combined to name four student-athletes to the 2009 MASCAC All-Conference teams as announced by the conference office this past weekend.

Sophomore John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) paved the way for Fitchburg State, collecting All-Conference first team honors, while senior Kris Breen (Griswold, Conn./Griswold), sophomore Karen Skoczylas (Palmer, Mass./Palmer) and classmate Meghan Callahan (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) were named to the All-Conference second team.

Phelan earns his first career post-season honor after having a standout year for the Falcons. He has led Fitchburg State with .400 batting average while tying the program's all-time single season hits mark of 54. The sophomore shortstop has registered team-highs in doubles (9), triples (3), and total bases (76), while ranking among league leaders in batting average (3rd), doubles (3rd), triples (2nd), and stolen bases (T-2nd). 


 
KAREN SKOCZYLAS

Breen, a 2009 MASCAC All-Conference second team honoree, earns his second career nomination after having a powerful season for the Falcons. Breen has led Fitchburg State in all power categories, posting a team-high six homeruns, 40 RBI and a .556 slugging percentage. More recently, Breen became the Falcons all-time single season RBI leader after driving in three over his last two contests.

Skoczylas collects her first All-Conference honor as a member of the Falcons softball squad after earning second team honors with a breakout season. Skoczylas ranked second on the team in batting, hitting .342 with seven doubles, two homeruns and 13 RBI, while posting a team-high seven stolen bases and 14 runs scored. She led the Falcons in conference play with a .441 average, three doubles, one long ball and nine RBI.

Callahan rounds out the Falcons All-Conference award winners with her second career nomination. This season, Callahan was consistent for the Falcons, hitting .338 with four doubles and nine RBI. The sophomore second basemen was one of the Falcons top

The Fitchburg State baseball team (18-16, 5-9 MASCAC) will be in action today as it closes its 2009 regular season with a match vs. MIT at 4 p.m. The Falcons softball team concluded its season with an overall record of 5-27 and a 2-10 mark in the MASCAC.
