Breen leads Falcons with a team-high two hits

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 13, 2009) - The Springfield College baseball team scored the final ten runs of the game as it rallied from an early deficit to defeat visiting Fitchburg State, 11-3, in non-conference action this afternoon.

two hits in the Falcons loss.

Senior Kris Breen (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) notched a team-high two hits to lead the Fitchburg State attack, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while classmate Andy Sauer (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) added a double and two runs scored. Sophomore Chris Smart (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) chipped in with a base-hit

Senior Luke Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) led the Springfield charge with four hits as he finished with four RBI in the contest. Junior Joe Kropa (Cranford, N.J./Roselle Catholic) tallied three hits and scored three runs to aid the Pride attack.

Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third, but Springfield rattled off ten unanswered runs as it connected for 14 hits for the day. The Pride grabbed its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning as Gabordi belted an RBI single to left center.

The Pride continued its offensive outburst as it tacked on two more in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Senior Drew Michael (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) provided the highlights with a base hit that plated two, while Gabordi led Springfield's four run seventh, cracking a two RBI single with the bases loaded.

Sophomore Steve Donah (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) shouldered the loss for the Falcons, giving up five runs, four earned, off nine hits. Junior Michael Cole (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) earned the win going 4.2 innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out three.

Fitchburg State (13-10, 2-4 MASCAC) will be back in action on tomorrow as it hosts MASCAC rival Worcester State at 2 p.m. Springfield (7-18, 3-5 NEWMAC) will travel to MIT tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
