FITCHBURG, Mass. (May 24, 2011) – Fitchburg State senior John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) was recently selected to play in the 2011 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Star game held at LeLacheur Park on Thursday June 2nd.

Last Tuesday, the NEIBA announced the 2011 Division III All-New England Teams, featuring 52 athletes from across the region. Phelan represented Fitchburg State and the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), being named to the All-New England third team for the first time in his career.

The 2011 campaign proved to be successful for Phelan, who cracked the program record books seven times throughout the season. The senior shortstop totaled five all-time marks in hits (185), runs (135), at-bats (521), doubles (41) and stolen bases (55), while posting two single-season records (doubles, runs) throughout the year.

Phelan, a two-time MASCAC All-Conference member, hit a team-best .388 with 13 doubles and 43 runs scored, while adding two triples, two homeruns and 26 RBI. He was a perfect 24-of-24 on the base paths, while slugging .560 and posting 75 total bases. For his efforts, he was named the Paul K. Waring ’38 Male Athlete of the Year at Fitchburg State.

The NEIBA All-Star game was established in 1975 and is a competition between the University team (Division I) and the College team (Divisions II and III). The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start on June 2nd at LeLacheur Park, home of the Lowell Spinners. Over its 36 game history, the University team has posted an overall record of 22-12-1 in the series, while teams were divided into East and West squads during the 1981 season.

The Fitchburg State baseball team concluded its 2011 season with an overall record of 16-18 and a 6-8 mark in the MASCAC. For more information regarding the NEIBA All-Star game of the Fitchburg State baseball team, please contact Sports Information Director, Keith Brouillard at 978-665-3343.
