Fitchburg State Sweeps Westfield State

Falcons take down conference leading Owls with 4-2 and 12-1 victories

WESTFIELD, Mass. (April 30, 2011) – The Fitchburg State baseball team swept conference leader Westfield State University in a MASCAC doubleheader this afternoon, posting a 4-2 victory in game one and a 12-1 victory in game two.

Fitchburg State scored all the runs it would need with four runs in the fifth inning. Seniors Brian Ware (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) and Erik DiMauro (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) started the rally with back-to-back singles, while classmate John Phelan (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) reached base with a fielder's choice. Sophomore Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) then stepped in a connected for a grand slam homerun to give the Falcons a four run cushion.

Westfield answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning by a and notched a lone run in the seventh but that's as close as the Owls would come as junior Michal Mercier (Townsend, Mass./Saint Bernards) dominated on the hill. Mercier struck out six and issued only one walk in his complete game outing, while counterpart Roman Mondalto suffered the loss for Westfield State, allowing four earned runs and five hits.

Fitchburg State 12, Westfield State 1

In the second game, Fitchburg exploded with four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to post a MASCAC doubleheader sweep and its fifth conference win of the season.

Phelan paced the Falcons' 19-hit onslaught, going 3-for-4 4 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored, while senior Dave Alexander (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, including a solo homer to stake the Falcons to a 1-0 second-inning lead.

Boice was also strong for Fitchburg State hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI. He finished the day with five hits and six RBI, while junior Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) added three hits and three runs scored in the nightcap.

Winning pitcher Alex Teal (Malden, Mass./Malden) struck out 11 and walked one during his five-hit complete game. Teal kept the Owls off balance all contest, improving to 4-4 on the season with no earned runs allowed.

Despite the victory, Fitchburg State concludes its season with an overall record of 16-18 and a 6-8 clip in the MASCAC, while Westfield State (18-19, 11-3 MASCAC) advances to the MASCAC Tournament as the top-seeded team. .
