Endicott Hits Past Fitchburg State, 14-3

Zajac finishes 3-for-4 on the afternoon to lead the Falcons in non-conference loss

LAKELAND, Fla. (March 13, 2012) – The Fitchburg State baseball team suffered a tough non-conference loss to Endicott College this afternoon, falling to the Gulls 14-3 at Lake Bonney Park in Lakeland, Florida.

Clinging  to a 4-3 lead after six innings of play, Endicott broke open the contest over the last three frames, scoring ten times, including a six run rally in the top of the eighth inning. EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) provided the big blow for the Gulls, smashing a two-run homerun over the right field wall, while Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) added a two-run single up the middle.

The Gulls opened the game with an early 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but Fitchburg State starter Frank Yavorosky (Westminster, Mass./Narragansett) settled in nicely, tossing six innings for the Falcons. Fitchburg State knotted the score with single runs in the first and second innings, but back-to-back runs in the fifth and sixth for the Gulls put Endicott back up by two (4-2).

Fitchburg State added another run in the bottom of the sixth as junior Andrew Dirga (Granville, N.Y./Granville) brought home Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) with a sacrifice fly, but that's as close of the Falcons would come as Endicott exploded for six runs and four hits in the eighth.

Junior Matt Zajac (New Hartford, Conn./Saint Paul Catholic) led the Falcons offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with a trio of singles and one run scored, while Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), Chris Rivera (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) and Ryan O'Sullivan (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) all added one hit and one RBI apiece.

Yavorosky stood strong on the mound, yielding just three earned runs with two K's over his six innings of work, while Bamforth worked 0.2 IP of scoreless relief. Endicott starter Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, Mass./Silver Lake) earned the win for the Gulls, scattering six hits and three runs (one earned) over six strong innings.

Fitchburg State (0-6, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles Vassar College at 4 p.m. Endicott (1-3, 0-0 TCCC) will face St. Joseph's Maine tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
