Dirga connects for two-run double in Falcons non-conference loss to Fisher
FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 17, 2012) – The Fitchburg State baseball team fell to visiting Fisher College 17-4 in non-conference action at Riccards Field this afternoon.
Fisher erupted for 17 runs on 16 hits has it collected its 20th victory of the season. Fitchburg State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening frame on a two run single by sophomore David Mason (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) but Fisher grabbed the lead for good in the fifth inning (3-2) on a single by Jose Paulino (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence) and a double off the bat of Davidson Perguero (Boston, Mass./Weatherford CC).
The visitors added six runs (11-2) in the following inning highlighted by a two run single from Dominic Zaher (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), but the Falcons did not quit, cutting their deficit to 11-4 in the bottom of the inning on a two run double by Andrew Dirga (Granville, N.Y./Granville).
Fisher put the game away in the sixth inning as it erupted for eight runs to post a commanding 17-4 advantage. The Blue and Gray were led offensively by Zaher, going 3-for-4 with a triple, five RBI and three runs scored, while Paulino added a 5-for-7 afternoon with a double and two RBI. Junior Ronald Rosario (Haverhill, Mass./Weatherford CC) was also solid with a trio of singles while driving in a pair.
Fitchburg State received a strong offensive outing from Mason, who finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while junior Matt Zajac (New Haven, Conn./ Saint Paul ) chipped in with a pair of singles.
On the mound, sophomore Moises Melo-Reyes (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) earned the win in relief for Fisher, allowing two runs on four hits in two innings of work. Senior Perry Russo (E. Hartford, Conn./E. Hartford) suffered the loss for Fitchburg State, yielding seven runs on seven hits while striking out three over five innings pitched.
Fitchburg State (8-21, 2-6 MASCAC) returns to action Thursday as it hosts Keene State at 3:30 p.m. Fisher College (20-23, 4-4 AMC) travels to Point Park University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
