Keene State Runs Past Fitchburg State, 17-6

Rivera goes 3-for-4 in Falcons non-conference setback to Owls
FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 19, 2012) – Keene State College exploded for 17 runs on 15 hits as it defeated Fitchburg State, 17-6 in non-conference baseball action at Riccards Field.
The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Andrew Gummow (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) before quickly padding their lead with a five run fourth inning. Tanner Chase (York, ME./Bridgton Academy) and Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H./Memorial) highlighted the Owls rally with a pair of two-run singles.
Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence in the fifth frame on RBI singles by Randy Ortiz, Jr. (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) and Chris Rivera (New Britain, Conn./New Britain), cutting its deficit to only four (6-2), but Keene State plated ten runs over the sixth and seventh innings to grab a commanding 16-2 lead.
The Falcons did not go quietly however as Rivera and Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) connected for RBI doubles in the seventh inning and junior Andrew Tremley (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) connected for his first career homerun in the eighth.
Keene State was led offensively by Peter Burgio (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) who notched a trio of singles, three runs scored and two RBI, while Chase finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Morrill was also solid with a pair of base hits and two RBI.
Leading the way for Fitchburg State was Rivera with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and two RBI, while Ortiz went 3-for-4 at the dish with a double, one RBI and a pair of runs scored. Tremley finished the afternoon, 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a pair of runs.
On the mound, junior Chris Crutcher (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) earned the win for Keene State, allowing just two runs on six hits while fanning six and walking just one in five innings. Junior Tynan Flegg (Calgary, AB/National Sports Academy) suffered the loss for Fitchburg State giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts over two innings.
Fitchburg State (8-22, 2-6 MASCAC) returns to action Saturday as it visits Framingham State at 1 p.m. Keene State (23-9, 6-2 LEC) will visit UMass Boston on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
