Fitchburg State Takes Down Vassar, 9-5

Flegg improves to 1-1 behind strong eight inning performance

LAKELAND, Fla. (March 14, 2012) – The Fitchburg State baseball team collected its first victory of the season, rallying past Vassar College, 9-5 this afternoon at Lake Myrtle Baseball Complex in Auburndale, Florida.

Fitchburg State used a five run, eighth inning, taking advantage of three Vassar errors to post its first lead of the contest at 6-4. Senior Will Comerford (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) connected on the big hit for the Falcons, crushing a two-out, two-run double to right center field, while sophomore David Mason (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) added a triple in the rally.

Vassar opened the contest with an early 3-0 lead, tacking on three unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning. Three consecutive singles from the Brewers and one Falcon error plated a pair of runs before a single from Mike Perrone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) capped the Vassar scoring surge.

In the fourth, Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence using an RBI double by Mason after Frank Yavorosky (Westminster, Mass./Narragansett) beat out an infield single but Vassar added a single run in the seventh to regain its three run advantage.

After the Falcons five run explosion in the top of the eighth, the Brewers posted another single score in the bottom of the frame to cut its deficit to only one (6-5), but four runs in the ninth by the Falcons and a scoreless inning from reliever Randy Ortiz (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) sealed the victory for Fitchburg State.

Mason and Yavorosky led the Falcon attack, collecting two hits apiece, while junior Matt Zajac (New Hartford, Conn./Saint Paul Catholic) blasted a two-run double in the Fitchburg State ninth inning rally. Junior Tynan Flegg (Calgary, AB/National Sport Academy) earned his first victory of the year (1-1), scattering 12 hits, five runs (one earned) and four K's over 8.0 IP.
