Clarks Takes Advantage Of Fitchburg State, 9-4

Mason and Hans notch two hits apiece in Falcons non-conference setback

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (April 5, 2013) – The Fitchburg State baseball team dropped a tough 9-4 setback to non-conference foe Clark University this afternoon at Pin Cannavino Field in McLaughlin Park.

Offensively, junior David Mason (Leominster, Mass.) and sophomore Pierce Hans (Washington Township, N.J.) led the Falcons attack, combining for four hits and a pair of RBI. Senior Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn.) added the lone extra base hit for the Falcons (RBI double), while Joseph Balboni (Townsend, Mass.) and A.J. Silberman (Meriden, Conn.) wrapped up the Falcon offense with one hit apiece.

Trailing by one after the first inning of play, Fitchburg State rifled off four consecutive runs to post a 4-1 advantage in the third inning of play. Boice kick started the Falcons three run surge with an RBI double to left center, while Hans followed with an RBI single through the left side. Mason then drove home the Falcons third run with a fielder's choice to the right side.

The Falcons lead was short-lived however as the Cougars cut into the Fitchburg State bullpen and erupted for seven runs over the final three innings of play. Clark went ahead for good with a four run, seventh inning before adding a pair of runs in the eight and a single score in the ninth.

On the hill, start Mike Martignetti (Boston, Mass.) received a no decision, going the first 4.2 innings of play. Sophomore Max Tejeda (Acton, Mass.) was also solid in two innings of relief, while classmate Dalton Wheeler (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) suffered the loss, yielding two runs in just 0.1 IP.

Fitchburg State (9-7-1, 1-1 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as it battles Bridgewater State University in a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
