Fitchburg State Draws With Curry, 3-3 (12 Innings)

Bamforth paces Falcons with three hits in non-conference tie

MILTON, Mass. (March 28, 2013) – Fitchburg State and Curry College played to a 3-3 twelve inning tie before the game was called due to darkness in non-conference baseball action this afternoon at the D. Forbes Will Athletic Complex.

The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior Randy Ortiz, Jr. (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) drove home classmate Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) on a groundout to shortstop and senior Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) singled through the left side to plate sophomore Pierce Hans (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) for the 2-0 advantage.

Curry threatened in the top of the third when freshman Mike Mallozzi (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) and sophomore Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) collected back-to-back singles to lead off the frame but Bamforth was able to strike out the next hitter before inducing an inning ending double play to get out of the jam.

The Colonels knotted the score (2-2) in the top of the fifth as they proceeded to loaded the bases off a single, an error and hit batter before sophomore Matt Warren (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) reached on a fielder's choice to score a run and senior Sam Barron (Hadley, Mass./Northampton) singled to drive in the tying run.

The two teams traded runs in the bottom of the seventh and top of eighth innings as freshman Javier Lozada (New Bedford, Mass../New Bedford) scored on a wild pitch for Fitchburg State and freshman Tim Lathrop (Colchester, Conn./Saint Bernard) brought home Barron via a sacrifice fly for Curry to make the score 3-3.

The Green and Gold loaded the bases in both the tenth and twelfth innings but Colonels pitchers Mark Rebello (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) and Tanner Givens (Hamden, Mass./Hamden) escaped both jams to preserve the 3-3 draw.

Fitchburg State was paced by Bamforth, who hit 3-for-6 at the plate including a double and one RBI, while junior AJ Silberman (Meriden, Conn./Wilcox Tech) and senior David Mason (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) registered two hits each. For Curry, Barron posted four hits with one run scored, one RBI and a pair of stolen bases, while Pizarro and senior Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) collected one hit apiece.

On the hill, Bamforth got the start for Fitchburg State, allowing three runs (2 earned) on five hits with five strikeouts, while sophomore Chris Kingsley (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) went the first three innings for the Colonels, allowing two earned runs on five hits.
