Daniel Webster Holds Off Fitchburg State, 5-3

Boice, Mason and Bamforth collect two hits apiece in Falcons loss

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 24, 2013) – The Fitchburg State University baseball team suffered a close non-league setback this afternoon, falling to Daniel Webster College, 5-3 at Harvey Woods Field.

Kyle Brigham (Hudson, N.H.) went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and knocked in two runs while Erick Bourdeau (Alton bay, N.H.) added two hits and knocked in the eventual game-winning run as Daniel Webster improved to 21-7. Fitchburg State moved to 13-19-1 overall with the setback.

Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, R.I.) added a pair of hits and picked up his fifth save and Joe Morin (Pelham, N.H.) knocked in one run.

Sean Hannon (Billerica, Mass.) earned the win on the mound (2-2) in relief of starter David Wesson (Pelham). Wesson went five innings while Hannon allowed two hits over three scoreless innings. Lizotte allowed two hits in a scoreless ninth.

Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn.) had a pair of hits including a double and knocked in a run for the Falcons, while Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn.) and David Mason (Leominster, Mass.) added two singles and knocked in a run apiece.

Javier Lozada (New Bedford, Mass.) took the loss (3-4), going 7 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits, but struck out seven.

Fitchburg State jumped on Wesson scoring twice in the top of the first on three hits including back-to-back RBI singles from Bamforth and Mason. DWC would tie it in the third on Brigham's first double of the day, a two-out shot that scored both Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.) and Darrik Marstaller (Spofford, N.H.)

Morin's single in the fourth would push Bourdeau across with an unearned run before Fitchburg tied it in the top of the sixth on a Boice sac fly that scored Michael Schofield (Van Nuys, Calif.).

DWC regained the lead for good in the bottom of the frame as Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, N.H.) was hit, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came home on Bourdeau's two-out single.

Back-to-back singles in the top of the ninth put the tying run at first for the Falcons, but Elliot Kilgore (Milford, N.H.) snagged a grounder starting a key 6-4-3 double play and snagged the next grounder on a tough hop to short to end it.

Fitchburg State (13-19-1, 4-8 MASCAC) visits Becker College tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
