Fitchburg State Soars Over Cazenovia, 8-1/12-4

Falcons belt out 21 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Cazenovia

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 11, 2014) – The Fitchburg State baseball team collected a pair of victories this afternoon, downing Cazenovia College, 8-1 and 12-4 in a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

In the opener, Fitchburg State cruised to an 8-1 victory after receiving a strong pitching performance from freshman Joe St. Hilaire (Chelmsford, Mass.) The rookie collected his third victory of the season with a complete game effort, while surrendering just five hits and striking out nine.

At the plate, freshman Joe Lyons (W. Roxbury, Mass.) paced the Falcons with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double and two RBI, while newcomer Clayton Beaulieu (Chicopee, Mass.) finished a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Senior David Mason (Leominster, Mass.) was also strong, hitting 1-for-1 with a pair of sac fly's.

In the nightcap, Fitchburg State again touched for double-digit hits en route to a 12-4 victory. Freshman Kyle Cutler (Clinton, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate victory, tossing 5.2 strong innings with four runs allowed and seven strikeouts.

At the plate, three Falcons registered at least two hits, while seven of the nine starters all notched base knocks. Freshman Mike St. John (Rehoboth, Mass.) was strong at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while junior Patrick McMahon (S. Windsor, Conn.) finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base. Mason added a triple and a pair of RBI, while freshman Jake Dallaire (N. Attleboro, Mass.) chipped in with a two RBI single.

Fitchburg State (8-2, 0-0 MASCAC) is back in action tomorrow as it battles SUNY Canton at 10:30 a.m.
