Fitchburg State Sweeps SUNY IT, 14-5/7-3

Mason paces Falcons with 5-for-8 performance, four runs scored and four RBI

LAKELAND, Fla. (March 10, 2014) – The Fitchburg State baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over the Wildcats of SUNY IT this afternoon at Lake Bonney Park in Lakeland, Fla. The Falcons notched a 14-5 victory in game one before sealing the sweep with a 7-3 triumph in game two.

In the opener, senior David Mason (Leominster, Mass.) led the Falcons 13-hit hit parade, going 4-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored and four RBI. Junior Patrick McMahon (S. Windsor, Conn.) was also solid, finishing 2-for-3 with a triple, four runs scored and a pair of walks, while newcomer Clayton Beaulieu (Chicopee, Mass.) added three hits, one run scored and two RBI.

On the mound, freshman Jake Kelley (N. Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up his first victory of the season, tossing 5.2 innings while yielding seven hits and five runs and striking out five. Classmate Tyler Smith (New Milford, Conn.) picked up the save in relief, gaining a key strike out in the sixth inning and closing the contest with a scoreless seventh.

In game two, Fitchburg State continued its momentum, posting seven runs on nine hits for a 7-3 victory. Junior Pierce Hans (Washington Township, N.J.) led the way for the Falcons in game two, hitting 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored and three RBI, while sophomore Brendan Cutler (Clinton, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of hits, one run scored and one RBI.

On the hill, sophomore Javier Lozada (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up his first victory of the season with a complete game effort. Lozada scattered nine hits throughout the contest, yielding three runs while striking out four and only walking one.

Fitchburg State (4-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action tomorrow as it battles Rhode Island College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
