Fitchburg State Swept by Lancers in Twinbill

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Worcester State University (15-10, 5-1 MASCAC) swept Fitchburg State University (10-10, 3-5 MASCAC) in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) baseball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Riccards Field. The Lancers took the first game 1-0, and then secured an 8-2 win the nightcap.

GAME ONE

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning Zach George hit a triple to center field over the head of Pierce Hans to score Brian Bonaquisti for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.

In the ensuing at-bats the Falcons were able to push the tying run in Brendan Cutler to third base, but Jared Kuzio was able to get Mike Martignetti to ground out to the shortstop to seal the victory.

Kyle Cutler suffered his first loss of the season and falls to 4-1 despite throwing a complete game four-hitter with eight strikeouts. His counterpart Kuzio threw a complete game shutout giving up just five hits with no walks, despite not having a strikeout to his name on the day.

B. Cutler and Hans both went 2-3 in the setback for the Green & Gold.


GAME TWO

Worcester State got on the board early as they tacked on one run in the opening inning on a sacrifice line-out to centerfield by Adam Barry that scored George from third. The Lancers added four more to their advantage in the second inning, including a Jeff Bolio double that plated in two runs.

Bolio continued his hot bat with a solo home run to right field in the top of the fourth that extended the visitors lead to 6-0.

Derrick Frazier reached base on an error by the third baseman that scored Luis Ortiz for the Falcons first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Steve McFadden followed with a single down the left field line that scored Clayton Beaulieu to ease the deficit to 6-2. 

In the top of the sixth inning Worcester State would add two more runs to their lead on a single to left field by Cody Osburn that brought home Adam Barry and Bolio for the final score of 8-2.

Joe Perlak earned this fourth win of the season on the mound for Worcester State, tossing all seven innings with two earned runs and two strikeouts. Tyler Smith suffered his second setback of the year going two innings for the Green & Gold.

Fitcburg State will be back in action tomorrow as they host Anchormen of Rhode Island College in a non-conference tilt at 3:30 pm at Riccards Field. Worcester State will host the Falcons of Fisher College tomorrow for a 3:30 pm start.
