Fitchburg State Defeated By Gordon, 13-5

Cuddahy hits second homerun on the season for Falcons in non-conference setback

WENHAM, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team returned to action this afternoon, dropping a 13-5 decision to the Fighting Scots of Gordon College in non-conference action at the J. Tec White Field. 

Fitchburg State took the lead in the top of the first as junior Sean Maki singled up the middle to bring home senior Nathan Littman, while freshman Brennan Cuddahy and junior Andrew Mooney added an RBI ground out and a run scoring double for the 4-0 advantage.

Gordon answered with five runs in the bottom half of the third when junior Addison Tarr drew a bases loaded walk to score sophomore Daniel Quint before sophomore Chris Leavitt and newcomer John Lagerfeldt chipped in with a pair of sacrifice fly's (5-4).

The Green and Gold cut the deficit to one in the top of the sixth as Cuddahy led off the frame with solo shot to right center for his second home run on the season to make the score 6-5.

The Fighting Scots upped its margin (10-5) in the home half of the sixth when newcomer Joseph Mack plated sophomore Brian Hodges with a sac fly to left before Quint blasted a three run homer to left two batters later.

Gordon secured the win in the bottom of the seventh as Hodges doubled to left to drive in Tarr and senior Dean Demers, while Lagerfeldt knocked in Leavitt with his second sacrifice fly on the afternoon, resulting in the 13-5 final.

Fitchburg State was led by Cuddahy, who went 1-for-4 with a home run, one run scored and two RBI, while Maki and Mooney combined for three hits, including a double, two runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.

For Gordon, Quint finished 3-for-4 with a home run, one double, three runs scored and three RBI, while Hodges chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double, two runs scored, two walks and two RBI.

On the hill, freshman Andrew Dunn took the loss for the Falcons, allowing one unearned run on one hit in one inning of relief, while newcomer Garrett Poole picked up the win for the Fighting Scots after giving up five runs on seven hits with nine K's in 7.2 innings of work. 

Fitchburg State (8-15, 1-3 MASCAC) returns to action on tomorrow as it hosts the Trailblazers of MCLA for a conference double header starting at 2:00 PM. Gordon (6-13, 2-4 CCC) will host the Colonels of Curry College on Saturday for a twin bill beginning at 12:00 PM.
