Falcons Soar Past AMCATS, 10-0 In Season Opener

Maki goes 3-for-4 with four RBI in non-conference victory

Northborough, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team opened its 2018 season this afternoon, defeating the AMCATS of Anna Maria College, 10-0 in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as senior Andrew Currie (Quincy, Mass.) walked, advanced to second on an error and crossed the plate on a double to right center by senior Sean Maki (Fitchburg, Mass.).

The Falcons upped into margin in the top half of the fifth frame when Maki connected on a bases clearing triple into the right centerfield gab that scored sophomore Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.), Currie and freshman Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) to make the score 4-0.

The Green and Gold added to their lead in the following stanza, scoring five times in the inning as Currie drove in a run with a single through the right side, while junior Noah Milliard (Leominster, Mass.) added a two-run double down the right field line for the 9-0 margin.

Fitchburg State capped the scoring in the top half of the seventh inning when sophomore Brandon Lefebvre (Leominster, Mass.) walked, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a triple to center off the bat of Macomber, resulting in the 10-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

Fitchburg State was paced by Maki, who went 3-for-4 at the dish with a double, triple, one run scored and four RBI, while Milliard finished 2-for-4, including a double and two runs batted in.

For Anna Maria, senior Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) hit 1-for-2 with a single, while newcomer Noah Holland (Sandwich, Mass.) and sophomore Phillip Antonucci IV (Revere, Mass.) added one hit each.

On the mound, freshman Ryan Towle (Westfield, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate win for the Falcons, allowing just three hits with six K's in five innings of relief.

For the AMCATS, junior Colin Pipkin (Peoria, Ariz.) took the loss, yielding four earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

16th meeting between the two schools on the diamond with the Falcons 14-2 all-time when taking on the AMCATS.

Fitchburg State has won the last seven contests against Anna Maria, including a double-header sweep (11-7, 17-2) last season at the New England Baseball Complex (3/28/17).

Falcons will travel to Salve Regina next Saturday to take on the Seahawks for a non-conference tilt, starting at 12:00 PM. AMCATS will take on the Hornets of Lyndon State for a double header on the same day in the opening contest of their annual spring trip to Florida at 9:00 AM.
