Falcons Split Doubleheader With Chargers

Drop opener 3-1; Rebound with 6-1 game two victory

Leesburg, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer on day one of its annual spring trip to Florida this afternoon as the Chargers took game one 3-1 before the Falcons secured the split with a 6-1 game two victory at the Pat Thomas Stadium.

How It Happened

In game one, Colby-Sawyer broke a 0-0 stalemate in the top of the fourth inning as senior Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) reached on a miscue and scored following a wild pitch for the 1-0 advantage.

The Chargers tacked on two more runs in the fourth when junior Liam de la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) walked, moved to third on single by senior Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H) and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Drew Inglesi (Franklin, Mass.) before classmate Tim Donovan (Litchfield, N.H.) laced a double to right that plated Fenuccio to make the score 3-0.

Fitchburg State answered back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fourth as senior Andrew Mooney (Framingham, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a walk from classmate Drew Mazzeo (Leicester, Mass.) and came around to score when fellow senior Andrew Currie (Quincy, Mass.) singled to right to cut the lead to 3-1.

In game two, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when freshman Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) tripled to left center and scored on a sacrifice fly to center from Currie.

Fitchburg State upped its margin (4-0) in the top half of the fourth as sophomore Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.) doubled down the leftfield line and scored along with classmate Timothy Horton (Northampton, Mass.) following a triple from Cordeau.

With the score 4-1, the Green and Gold secured the game two win when sophomore Brennan Cuddahy (Leominster, Mass.) singled and classmate Brandon Lefebvre (Leominster, Mass.) doubled to put runners on second and third before Macomber drove home Cuddahy and Lefebvre with double into the left center gap for the 6-1 margin.

Inside the Numbers

Senior Sean Maki (Fitchburg, Mass.) paced the Falcons in game one, going 2-for-4 with a double, while junior Noah Milliard (Leominster, Mass.) finished 1-for-3, including a double.

On the mound, junior Tommy Parsons (Peabody, Mass.) took the game one loss for Fitchburg State, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and six K's in four innings of work.

For the Chargers, Donovan hit 1-for-3, including a double and an RBI, while Blotier added a double and one run scored.

Junior Ryan Glendye (Litchfield, N.H.) picked up the game one win for Colby-Sawyer, yielding one run on five hits and one K in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State's game two offense was led by Cordeau, who hit 2-for-4 with a pair of triples, two runs scored and two RBI, while Macomber went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Ryan Towle (Westfield, Mass.) earned the win for the Falcons to improve to 2-0 on the season afternoon giving up just one run on four hits and seven K's in five innings of work.

Colby-Sawyer was paced by senior Doug Avellino's (Woodstock, Vt.) 2-for-4 effort, while Danaher finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Newcomer Noah Yeingst (Middleboro, Mass.) suffered the setback for the Chargers, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits with three punch outs over the course of five innings.

Eighth meeting between the two schools in baseball with the Falcons 4-4 all-time when taking on the Chargers.

Fitchburg State had won three of the previous four matchups with Colby-Sawyer, while the two teams spilt a double header (4-3/1-5) in the last meeting on March 8, 2014.
