Winter Haven, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team swept the Continentals of Hamilton College, 5-2/9-0 in non-conference action this afternoon on day four of the Falcons annual spring trip to Florida.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second senior Andrew Currie (Quincy, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk that scored sophomore Andrew Curran (Leominster, Mass.) before senior Sean Maki laced a bases clearing double to plated Currie and sophomores Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.) and Brandon Lefebvre (Leominster, Mass.).

Hamilton cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth when junior Jordan Northrup (Clarksville, Md.) singled in sophomore James Nish (Cutchogue, N.Y.), while newcomer Jacob Han (Vienna, Va.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in sophomore Graham McOsker (Norwell, Mass.), resulting in the 5-2 game one final.

In the night cap, Fitchburg State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore Zachary Gull (Rutland, Mass.) doubled home junior Noah Milliard (Leominster, Mass.) and Maki before the Falcons tacked on three more runs (5-0) in the top half of the fourth with Currie and Curran driving in runs with a single and a bases loaded walk.

The Green and Gold secured the sweep in the top of the fifth when Pingitore doubled down the leftfield line to score classmate Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.) , while Currie followed with a two-run triple to center, plating Pingitore and Lefebvre, resulting in the 9-0 game two final.

Inside the Numbers

In the opener, Maki led the way for the Falcons, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run scored and three RBI, while sophomore Brennan Cuddahy (Leominster, Mass.) added one hit and an RBI.

For Hamilton, newcomer Joe Suski (Avon, Conn.) finished 1-for-2 at the dish with a double and a walk, while Northup added a single and a base knock.

On the mound, junior Tommy Parsons (Peabody, Mass.) picked up his second win on the season, allowing just one hit with nine strikeouts in five innings of work for the Falcons, while junior Adam Somers (Framingham, Mass.) collected his second save after pitching 1.1 innings of perfect relief (3 K's).

In the second game of the double header, Fitchburg State was led by Currie, who finished 3-for-5 with a triple, one run scored and three RBI, while Lefebvre added three hits and two runs scored.

On the bump, freshman Ryan Towle (Westfield, Mass.) earned his third victory of the 2018 campaign, giving up just one hit with a season-best 15 K's in the complete game effort for the Green and Gold.

Sixth meeting between the two schools on the baseball diamond with the Falcons currently 5-1 all-time when taking on the Continentals.

Fitchburg State has the last four meetings with Hamilton College, notching a 7-3/5-1 double header sweep last season (3/15/17).
