Northboro, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team fell to the AmCats of Anna Maria College 9-3, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at New England Baseball Complex.

How It Happened                                                                                      

Anna Maria opened up the scoring in the top of the second frame. With runners on first and second freshman Jason Shell (Sandwich, Mass) delivered a one-out double to deep right center field. Tanner Jakola (Leominster, Mass.) walked and Nick Genatossio (Sutton, Mass.) singled to set the table for Shell.

Fitchburg State University answered in the bottom of the frame, manufacturing 2 runs without a hit. Alexander Bissanti (Franklin, Mass.) crossed the plate on an AmCats wild pitch for the Falcons first score. Two batters later Brennan Cuddahy (Leominster, Mass.) plated Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) with a sacrifice fly to knot the score at 2-2.

AmCats' Genatossio broke the deadlock with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. 

After Anna Maria notched a run in the top of seventh inning, the hosts answered to cut the deficit to 4-3 as Cuddahy wrapped a two-out double in the home half plating Sean Maki (Fitchburg, Mass.) from first base. ​

Anna Maria broke open the game with a three-run eighth inning. Jakola and sophomore Adam Twitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass.) collected RBI's with walks and Shell drove in teammate Greg Gehring (Southold, NY) with a sacrifice fly.

Anna Maria would tag on two more runs in the ninth for the 9-3 final.

Inside the Numbers

17th meeting between the two teams on the baseball field with the Falcons 14-3-0 all-time when taking on the AMCATS.

Fitchburg State had won the last seven contests against Anna Maria, including a 10-0 decision in the last match-up with the AMCATS earlier this season (2/27/18) at the New England Baseball Complex.​

The Falcons were paced by Cuddahy, who finished 1-for-2 with a double, walk and two RBI.

Genatossio led the AMCATS going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Shell finished the night with three RBI's.

On the mound, freshman Shaun Gamelin (West Kingston, RI) took the loss for the Green and Gold after allowing four runs, a hit with three K's in one inning of work. AmCats starter Jack Marzec (Northbridge, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season, giving up no hits with two strikeouts and seven walks over five innings, while junior Colin Pipkin (Peoria, Ariz) was credited with the save.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday. The Falcons will travel to the Engineers of WPI for a 3:30pm match-up at the New England Baseball Complex, while Anna Maria will face Rhode Island College at 3:30 pm.
