Ferrell collects first collegiate hit for Fitchburg State in non-conference victory
Kingston, R.I. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team opened its 2019 season this afternoon, defeating the Seahawks of Salve Regina University, 5-0 in non-conference action from the Bill Beck Field on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.

How It Happened
Fitchburg State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as sophomore Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) tripled to right center, before junior Timothy Horton (Northampton, Mass.) plated Cordeau with a single to right field.
The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) in the top half of the seventh when junior Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.) drew a walk, advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt before scoring following a throwing miscue off a grounder to third.
Fitchburg State upped its margin in the top of the eighth as senior Noah Milliard (Leominster, Mass.) walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Pingitore before sophomore Johan Asencio (Clinton, Mass.) crossed the plate on freshman Brendan Ferrell's (Plymouth, Mass.) first collegiate hit for the 4-0 lead.
The Green and Gold would secure the victory later in the eighth when Pingitore eventually came around to score on a failed pick-off attempt after Ferrell swiped second base to draw the throw to third base, resulting in the 5-0 final
Inside the Numbers
- Seventh meeting between two school with the Falcons 4-3 vs the Seahawks
- Pingitore led the way for the Falcons, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored
- Ferrell added his first collegiate hit as well as an RBI for Fitchburg State
- Dustin Siqueira (Trumbull, Conn.) paced the Seahawks, going 2-for-3
- Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) chipped in with one hit for Salve Regina
- Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) went 7.2 innings shutout innings, allowing three hits with six K's for the Falcons to earn the win
- Patrick Maybach (Saunderstown, R.I.) took the loss for the Seahawks, yielding one run on three this and 14 strikeouts in six innings of work.

Falcons return to action on Sunday as they take on the Colonels of Curry College at the New England Baseball Complex for a non-conference double-header, starting at 12:00 PM. Seahawks will take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Western next Friday in the opening game their annual spring trip to Florida at 1:30 PM.
