Fitchburg State Opens up Florida Trip with Win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – With a dominating pitching performance from junior Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) the Fitchburg State University baseball team downed the Griffins of Fontbonne University 9-2 on day one of its spring trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational.

How It Happened

The Falcons started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. After opening up the frame with a single down the left field line sophomore Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) scored off a Brennan Cuddahy (Leominster, Mass.) double. Junior Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.) plated teammates Noah Millard (Leominster, Mass.) and Cudahy with a deep triple to centerfield and crossed home one batter later for the 4-0 lead.

Falcons added a pair in the third inning. An infield single by junior Alexander Bissanti (Franklin, Mass.) scored Millard who had reached third on a pair of wild pitches. Junior Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.) knocked in Bissanti with a single to push the advantage to 6-0.

Fontbonne tipped the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a home run from senior Matt Tossick, his first of the season.

The Griffins added another run in the top of the eighth inning while the Green and Gold's Cordeau added an RBI triple and Cuddahy a 2RBI single in the bottom of the frame for the 9-2 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Sharp earned his second win of the season for the Falcons. His stat line read: 7 innings pitched, 4 hits, one run, two walks and four strikeouts.
  • Fontbonne starting pitcher, junior Tyler Scott was tabbed with the loss. In seven innings pitched he gave up 4 earned runs on nine hits, two walks and six strikeouts.
  • Cordeau batted 3-for-5 with 2 runs and an RBI while Cuddahy was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored.
  • Fontbonne was held to just three hits on the afternoon.
