Falcons Earn Split With Anchormen

Gamelin records first collegiate save in game two victory

Rindge, N.H. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team split a non-conference double header with the Anchormen of Rhode Island College  this afternoon at Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University as the Falcons dropped the opener 11-6 before collecting a 7-6 triumph in the night cap.

How It Happened

Game One

Rhode Island College opened the scoring in the top half of the second as junior Josh Silva (Seekonk, Mass.) singled to left field to drive in freshman Charlie Amarante (Bristol, R.I.) and junior Rommy Morel (Providence, R.I.) before junior Nate Vigeant (Coventry, R.I.) and senior Tyler Walsh (Cumberland, R.I.) added run scoring base knocks for the 4-0 lead.

Fitchburg State cut the deficit in half (4-2) in the bottom half of the third when senior Noah Milliard (Leominster, Mass.) launched a two-run home run over the right field fence that plated sophomore Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.).

The Anchormen upped it margin in the top of the fourth as junior Sam Franco (Cranston, R.I.) doubled to right center that scored Walsh and newcomer Stephen Andrews (Lincoln, R.I.) before junior Ray Zincone (West Warwick, R.I.) registered an RBI groundout to make the score 8-2.

Rhode Island College extended its lead in the top of the seventh when sophomore Joseph Coro (North Providence, R.I.) laced a two-run single to right, while Vigeant doubled home Coro for the 11-2 edge.

The Falcons answered back in the bottom half of the stanza as freshman Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.), classmate Brendan Ferrell (Plymouth, Mass.) and Millard notched run scoring hits, resulting in the 11-6 final.

Game Two

Fitchburg State grabbed a 2-0 margin in the bottom of the first when Eramo ripped a two-run double into the right center field gap that plated Milliard and Ferrell. The Green and Gold pushed across another run in the bottom of the third as junior Brandon Lefebvre (Leominster, Mass.) drove in Eramo with a sacrifice fly to right field for the 3-0 edge.

Rhode Island College answered back in the top half of the fourth, scoring five runs with Zincone, junior Nick Feola (North Providence, R.I.), Morel, Amarante and Coro drove in runs to take a 5-3 lead.

The Green and Gold regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Johan Asencio (Clinton, Mass.) singled in junior Joshua Macomber (Berkley, Mass.) before fellow junior Timothy Horton (Northampton, Mass.) brought in Lefebvre with a single to center for the 6-5 lead.

The Anchormen retied the contest (6-6) in the top of the sixth when Morel hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Zincone, but Fitchburg State took the lead back in their half of the sixth as Lefebvre knocked in Milliard with a single to left, resulting in the 7-6 final.

Falcons will travel to Lasell College on Tuesday to take on the Lasers for a non-conference matchup, starting at 5:00 PM. Anchormen will visit Eastern Connecticut State on the same date for a non-conference tilt at 4:00 PM.
