Falcons Swept by Bucs in MASCAC Doubleheader

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Riccards Field. The Bucs took game one 15-3, and the nightcap 11-1.

How It Happened - Game 1

The Bucs jumped on the scoreboard at the top of the first inning, sophomore Brett Velzis (Cypress, TX) belted a three-run home run to deep center field for the 5-0 early lead. Senior Aidan Henderson (Hanover, Mass.) extended the lead for the visitors (8-0) with a three-run home run in the second inning.

The Falcons added a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame when they capitalized on a defensive miscue and senior Brendan Ferrell (Plymouth, Mass.) added a run with an infield single.

Mass. Maritime put the game out of reach with a seven-run third inning capped by a home run from junior John Troupea (East Sandwich, Mass.). Senior Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass. ) notched his sixth home run of the season for the Falcons in the third inning.

Inside the Numbers - Game 1

  • Junior Brodey Tinkham (Norton, Mass.) garnered the win for the Buccaneers, throwing a complete game in seven  innings of work, allowing two earned run on three hits with 4 K's

  • Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) took the loss for the Falcons  allowing 13 runs (7 earned) with a strikeout and two walks over 2.2 innings

How It Happened - Game 2

MMA continued with the hot bat in game two. With runners on second and third, Troupea singled through the left side for 2 RBIs. Two batters later junior Chris Perito (East Falmouth, MA.) homered to extend the score to 5-0 in the second inning.

In the top of the fourth inning the Buccaneers pushed the lead to 9-0, Troupea, Velzis, and AJ Pietrafesa (Harwinton, Conn.) added RBI hits.

Trailing 11-0 the Falcons broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out sophomore Silas Thomas (Sequim, Wash.) singled to left-centerfield scoring classmate Christopher Masta (Peabody, Mass.).

Inside the Numbers - Game 2

  • Freshman Hunter Dean (Plymouth, Mass.) captured the win for the visitors, he went seven innings allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts.

  • Brendan Ferrell suffered the loss for the Falcons, allowing five runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

The Falcons will host Worcester State on Monday in a MASCAC conference game, first pitch is slated for Noon.
