Lancers Race Past Falcons in MASCAC Baseball Action

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Riccards Field on Monday afternoon

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 6, Worcester State 11

How It Happened 

Worcester State took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With runners on second and third senior Thomas DiBattista (Hudson, Mass.) singled to score freshman Trent Balian (Lynnfield, Mass.) who had walked with one out.

Fitchburg State evened the score in the bottom of the frame when junior Zachary Malek (Schenectady, NY) led off with a home run and took a 2-1 lead when Christopher Masta (Peabody, Mass.) scored on a throw down to second base.

The Lancers regained the lead with a five-run fifth inning, senior Sean Devin (Lynn, Mass.) delivered a double to left-centerfield to plate two runs.

Trailing 7-2 in the sixth inning the Green and Gold rallied for three runs. Zach Malek drew a walk to open the inning and Masta singled down the leftfield line setting the table for Zachary Morris (Salem, NH) who belted a home run to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Worcester State added insurance runs in the eighth inning with DiBattist and Zach Roberts (Northbridge, Mass.) lacing RBI singles en route to the 11-6 final.

Inside the Numbers 

  • Senior Adam Kirsch (New London, Conn.) pitched four strong innings for the Falcons allowing one run over four innings. Freshman Robert Clarke (Plymouth, Mass.) took the loss allowing five runs on three hits. 

  • Junior Kevin Zarnoch (Boston, Mass.) posted his second win of the season allowing just two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over five innings.

The Falcons will head to Bridgewater State on Friday afternoon for a MASCAC conference game, starting at 3:00 PM.
