Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the Bears of Bridgewater State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Riccards Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bears blanked the Falcons 7-0 in game one and took the nightcap 5-2.

The Basics

Score (GM 2): Fitchburg State 2, Bridgewater State 5
Records: Fitchburg State (6-26, 2-11 MASCAC) | Bridgewater State (21-10, 11-2 MASCAC)

How It Happened  (Game 1)

The Bears scored all the runs they would need in the second inning. Senior Jonathan O'Donnell (Hull, Mass.) led off the inning with a double through the right side and scored on a double from sophomore Kyle Suraci (Clinton, Mass.). With two outs sophomore Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.) had the third double of the inning scoring Suraci to push the lead to 3-0.

After scoring a single run in the fifth frame, Bridgewater plated three more runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore Joe Frechette (Plymouth, Mass.) and Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) each had RBI hits for the Bears.

Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.), Nolan Hills (Danvers, Mass.), and Devin Lorae (Canton, Ga.) had the hits for the Falcons.

Inside the Numbers (Game 1)

  • Matt Josselyn (Hanson, Mass.) earned the victory for the Bears. Josselyn went a complete game seven innings allowing just three hits with four strikeouts for his fifth win of the season.

  • Sharp took the loss for the Falcons, pitching five and a third innings allowing seven runs on ten hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Jovanni Merced (Springfield, Mass.) pitched an inning and two-thirds of relief with four K's for the Green and Gold.

How It Happened  (Game 2)

Jonathan O'Donnell had an RBI single in the top of the first inning to help Bridgewater State jump out to an early 1-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as sophomore Silas Thomas (Sequim, Wash.) belted the first pitch he saw over the rightfield fence to knot the score.

Ahead 2-1 the Bears doubled their score (4-1) in the fourth inning with a two-run RBI single from Scott Emerson.

Senior Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double down the left-field line. After a sacrifice fly from Sharp to move Eramo to third, junior Zachary Malek (Schenectady, NY) singled up the middle to score Eramo to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Bears would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh resulting in the 5-2 final.

Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
