Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's ice hockey team had three players notch a pair of goals as the Falcons skated past the Greyhounds of Assumption College 8-3 on Saturday evening at Wallace Civic Center.

How It Happened

The Falcons came flying out of the gated to tip the twine on the first shot of the game. Junior Nick DiNicola (Wolcott, Conn.) fed a centering pass to senior Corey Hayashi (Toronto, Ont.) for his first goal of the season just seventy-one seconds into the frame. Assumption evened the score on a goal by senior Brian Farrell (Island Park, NY) at the 16:14 mark of the period.

Knotted at one heading into the second period, Fitchburg State University broke the game open with three straight scores. A pair of power-play goals from Christopher Vicario (Cranston, RI) and Sascha Figi (Kloten, Switzerland) and an even-strength tally from Kyle Hillick (Byfield, Mass.) over a five minute span pushed the score to 4-1. Assumption made it 4-2 with a man-advantage goal from John Chamberlain (Amesbury, Mass.) to close out the frame.

The Falcons received third period goals from the same trio (Figi, Hillick and Vicario) who scored in the second to give the hosts a 7-2 lead midway through the stanza before the Greyhounds cut the deficit to 7-3 on a marker by Matt Damelio with just over two minutes remaining in the period.

Freshman Spencer Segui (North Haven, Conn.) rounded out the scoresheet for the Falcons, notching his first collegiate goal for the 8-3 final.

By The Numbers

Figi finished the night with a game-leading five points (2 goals, 3 assists), Vicario added four points (2 goals, 2 assists) while Hayashi and Hillick finished with 2 points apiece.

In his first collegiate game played, freshman Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) posted the win, stopping 28 shots.

Farrell let the Hounds with a goal and an assist. Freshman David Altman (Bristol, RI) made nine saves in 49 minutes of play for the visitors, and junior Brian Nazzaro (Braintree, Mass.) had two saves in 11 minutes of relief.

This was the 37th meeting between two schools on the ice with the Falcons 28-8-1 all-time when taking on the Greyhounds.

Assumption had won four of the previous six matchups with Fitchburg State.
