McGuire has Interim Tag Removed, Named Football Head Coach

Fitchburg, Mass. – Fitchburg State University's Athletic Director Matthew Burke announced today that the interim tag will be removed from Jim McGuire and he will become the 8th head football coach in school history.

"Coach McGuire is a veteran who has already proven his ability to provide the kind of leadership that is needed for the University's football program," said Burke. "Removing the interim tag from Coach McGuire's title was an ideal outcome based on job performance since taking on the position of Interim Head Coach this past winter."

McGuire was named to the interim role on February 13th after the resignation of Pat Haverty.

McGuire started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Dean College during the 1998 season before becoming the Falcons running backs coach in 1999. Following one season as an assistant coach at Assumption, he returned to Fitchburg State as the Offensive Coordinator from 2002-2005.

From 2008-2011, McGuire served as an assistant coach (Running Backs) at Assumption College before becoming the Falcons' Offensive Coordinator during the 2011 campaign. Following a third stint at Assumption (2012), McGuire served as an assistant coach at WPI from 2013-14. Coach McGuire returned to Fitchburg State the following season, serving as the Special Team Coordinator/Running Back Coach from 2015-17, before being elevated to head coach.

"I am grateful to Fitchburg State University, President Richard Lapidus, Vice President Laura Bayless and Athletic Director Matthew Burke for the opportunity to continue to lead this great football program and a dedicated group of young men," explained McGuire. "The future of Fitchburg State University football is a bright one and I feel excited and humble that I get an opportunity to lead our student-athletes going forward."

The Falcons notched the first collegiate win for Coach McGuire this past Saturday with a 36-20 victory over the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The Green and Gold return to the gridiron this Saturday when they travel to Framingham State University for a noontime kickoff.
