Garvin Earns New England Football Writers’ Association Gold Helmet Award

Canton, Mass. native nets third weekly accolade of the 2018 season

Cambridge, Mass. – Fitchburg State senior running back Sterlin Garvin (Canton, Mass. Canton) was awarded the New England Writers' Association Gold Helmet after a career performance last week.

The senior tailback earns the prestigious weekly honor after rushing for a career best 296 yards on 36 yards and four touchdowns of 71 yards, 64 yards, 15 yards and nine yards in the Falcons 32-29 victory over the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon.

The 296 yards on the ground were the second most rushing yards in a single game for the Green and Gold and most since former Falcon standout running back D'Andra Freeman's school record total of 299 rushing yards during the 1999 season.

Garvin became just the fifth member of the Fitchburg State football team to garner NEFWA Gold Helmet Accolades, joining Freeman, Treavor Smith, Marlon Thornton and Garrett Dellechiaie.

The Fitchburg State football team recently conclude its 2018 season with an overall record of 2-8 and a 2-6 mark in conference play.
