Maritime Downs Falcons in MASCAC Football Action

Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University football team fell to the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy 37-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon.

How It Happened

1st Quarter

Senior Matt Long (Weymouth, Mass.) keyed a pair of scores to propel the Buccaneers to a 14-0 lead after one quarter. On the ground Long scampered one yard for the early 7-0 lead and then found tight end sophomore Jacob Daniels (Auburn, Mass.)  for a 47-yard touchdown pass.

2nd Quarter

Long pushed the hosts to a 21-0 lead with a 12 yard run just 3:39 into the second frame. Field goal kicker George Lampros (Bridgewater, Mass.) connected on a 23-yard score to give the blue and gold a 24-0 advantage at the intermission.

4th Quarter

After a scoreless third quarter, Maritime closed out the game with a pair of scores. Lane notched his third running touchdown on the day, while senior defensive back Hunter Leveille (Easthampton, Mass) scored on a 62-yd interception.

Inside the Numbers

  • Fitchburg State was led by sophomore Steven Lawton (Ayer, Mass), who ran for 61 yards on 15 carries, while junior Melchior Lynch (Roxbury, Mass.) had 65 yards on 15 carries. Senior Joshua Nelson (Providence, RI) and freshman Frank Sims IV (Saugus, Mass.) combined for six catches, 66 yards receiving.
  • For MMA, Long completed 10-of-21 passes for 145 yards, 100 yards rushing and four TD's.
  • Defensively, junior Mukandu Ashema (Worcester, Mass.) paced the Falcons with a team-best eleven stops on seven solo tackles and four assisted stops, while junior defensive back Caleb Gonsalves (Mashpee, Mass.) posted nine tackles on six solo stops and two sacks. Junior Joel Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) had two tackles and an interception.

The Falcons will host the Owls of Westfield State next Saturday for a MASCSC homecoming kick-off at 2:00 pm, while the Buccaneers are at Plymouth State for a 1:00 pm tilt on the same day.
