Falcons Honor 14 on Senior Day


Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University football team fell to the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University 41-7 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon.

It was senior day at Elliot field as the Falcons honored the following 14 student-athletes: Richard Austin (Wareham, Mass.), Connor Boland (S. Hampstead, NY), Connor Briggs (E. Tauton, Mass.), Jesse Brown (Yonkers, NY), Arnold Caddell (Webster, Mass.), Malik Crawford (Yonkers, NY), Connor Fitzsimons (Flushing, NY), Mory Keita (Pawtucket, RI), David Morales (Lawrence, Mass.), Darious Morkeski (Meuthen, Mass.), Andrew Gourgue (Randolph, Mass.), William Jamison (Quincy, Mass.), Kyle Larson Santeusanio (Woburn, Mass.) and Joshua Nelson (Providence, RI).

How It Happened

After a scoreless first quarter, Western Connecticut senior quarterback David James (Stamford, Conn.) found senior wide receiver Nick Kimball (New Milford, Conn.) in the corner for a 14-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. James was a perfect 8-for-8 over 76 yard in the scoring drive.

The Falcons knotted the score (7-7) on the ensuing drive. Starting deep in the visitors zone the Green and Gold reeled off four first downs to put themselves at first and goal from the Colonials 10 yard line. Four plays later senior quarterback Connor Fitzsimons (Flushing, NY) delivered a strike to senior Jesse Brown (Yonkers, NY) in the endzone. Junior Linnea D'Acchille (Valley Falls, NY) connected on her seventh straight extra point for the hosts.

Sophomore running back Jashua Alvarez (Staten Island, NY) had a 2-yard run for a touchdown to allow Western Connecticut to regain the lead (14-7) after the Colonials had received the second half kickoff. With 3:26 remaining in the frame sophomore Will Daniels (Bethel, Conn.) collected a 13-yard reception from James to push the lead to 21-7.

The Colonials added three more scores in the fourth. Senior Devon Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) and junior Thomas Walsh (Great River, NY) each had a rushing touchdown while Daniels tacked on a 7-yard TD for the 41-7 final. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Fitchburg State was led by sophomore Steven Lawton (Ayer, Mass), who ran for 124 yards on 28 carries, while freshman Robert Jackson (Worcester, Mass.) had 76 yards on 15 carries. Brown and Nelson combined for six catches, 71 yards receiving and a touchdown.
  • Falcons' quarterback Fitzsimons finished 11-for-25 for 96 yards and one touchdown, his counterpart James was 21-for-30 for 228 yards and three scores.
  • For Western Connecticut Daniels had 121 yards on 9 carries with two touchdowns and Alvarez had 82 yards receiving and a score.
  • Defensively, Austin and Caddell paced the Falcons with a team-best seven stops each on four solo tackles and three assisted stops. Junior Vincent Scancarello (Monroe, NY) had a game best 11 total tackles while Jarius Bailey (Cromwell, Conn.) and Devon Smith (Wethersfield, Conn) each had an interception.
