season-opener

BEVERLY, Mass. (September 3, 2008) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team suffered a tough 4-0 season-opening loss to Endicott College in non-conference action this afternoon.

The Endicott offensive attack was led by sophomore Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md./River Hill)  who led all scorers with a game-high two goals, while freshman Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) and sophomore Amanda Shaw (Bristol, Vt./Mt. Abraham Union) each netted a goal for the Gulls.

Senior Michelle Berard (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) and freshman Alexandra Parese (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) each registered an assist on the day for Endicott, while senior Samantha Bourgeois (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) and classmate Jennifer Beech (Devonshire, Bermuda/Saltas Grammar) added one helper apiece.

Endicott jumped out to an early 3-0 in the first half led by the offensive play of Reid. The Gulls opened the scoring just 3:08 into the game as Anna Giannoni netted her first goal of the game off an assist from Berard. The Gulls increased their lead to 3-0 just moments later as Reid connected for back-to-back goals off assists from Bourgeois and Beech.

In the second half, the Endicott offense was silenced by the Fitchburg State defense. The lone goal of the half was scored by the Gulls as Shaw blasted a shot by Falcon goaltender Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass/Seekonk) at the 13:47 mark.
