Keene State Holds Down Fitchburg State, 2-0

Brown stops four in pivotal Little East setback

KEENE, N.H. (October 23, 2010) – Junior forwards Elizabeth Coffin (Sugar Hill, N.H.) and Niki Smith (Southwick, Mass.) scored a pair of second half goals, leading Keene State College to a pivotal Little East Conference victory over Fitchburg State, 2-0 this afternoon.

The win enabled Keene State (12-5, 7-3 LEC) to stay ahead of Fitchburg State (9-6, 6-4) in fourth place of the LEC standings. Fitchburg saw its two game winning streak come to an end as it closes out the regular season next week.

After a scoreless first half, Smith gave Keene State a 1-0 lead at the 44:33 mark when she tipped a shot past Falcon sophomore goalie Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) for her fourth goal of the season. Coffin followed suit just 14 minutes later as she connected for her team-leading 21st marker of the season to give the Owls a strong two goal advantage.

Keene State outshot Fitchburg State 11-5 throughout the contest, while posting a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalie Meghan Ledoux (Standish, Maine) made three saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season, while Brown finished the game with four saves for the Falcons.

The Owls wrap up their home regular season schedule with a non-conference game against New England College on Tuesday. Fitchburg hosts Becker College on Wednesday.

Fitchburg State (9-6, 6-4 LEC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Becker College at 7 p.m. Keene State (12-5, 7-3 LEC) will host New England College on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
