Fitchburg State Falls To Keene State, 3-0

Begin stops five shots in Falcons first conference loss of the year

KEENE, N.H. (September 17, 2011) – The Fitchburg State field hockey team fell to conference rival, Keene State College, 3-0 in Little East Conference action this afternoon.

Keene State improves to 4-1 overall and remains undefeated (2-0) in the Little East, while Fitchburg State falls to 3-3 on the year and 1-1 in the conference.

Senior Alyce Ferenc (Rumney, N.H.) gave Keene State an early 1-0 when she found the back of the net just 5:27 into the game. Despite being limited to zero shots in the first half, Fitchburg State and senior goaltender Taylor Begin (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) turned away seven Owl shots to keep the score 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Owls tacked on two more goals to seal the victory. Sophomore Aimee Donaruma made it a 2-0 contest when she knocked in a shin-high pass out of the air from sophomore Katlyn Simula (Bridgewater, N.H.) for her first goal of the season. Coffin concluded the scoring with just under three minutes to play, tallying her fifth goal of the season on a corner play. 

Keene State dominated play, especially in the second half posting 12-4 advantage in shots throughout the period. The Owls outshot the Falcons 19-4 for the game and had a 10-2 advantage in corners. Freshman goalie Caitlin Davino-Draper (Hanover, Mass.) needed to make just one save to post her second shutout of the season, while Begin stopped five shots in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State.

Fitchburg State (3-3, 1-1 LEC) will be back in action on Thursday as it visits Rivier College at 7 p.m. Keene State (4-1, 2-0 LEC) will face Springfield College tomorrow at 1 p.m.).
