Holewa registers seven saves for Falcons
FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 28, 2013) – The Fitchburg State field hockey team dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Bridgewater State in Little East Conference (LEC) action this evening at Elliot Field.
Bridgewater State raced out to a quick lead just 28 seconds into the first period as senior forward Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) intercepted a pass and streaked up the middle of the field and deposited the ball into the back of the cage for her team-leading seventh tally of the season to put the Bears up 1-0 after 35 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Bears doubled their lead (2-0) at the 41:06 mark when senior Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.) took a feed from Miskiv and blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the net for her third score of the year to cap the scoring.
Throughout the match, Bridgewater State controlled the offensive play, outshooting the Falcons by a 17-2 margin, while also holding an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners. In the cage, junior Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) collected seven stops for the Falcons in 59 minutes of work, while senior Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) made one save for Bridgewater State en-route to her sixth victory of the year.
Fitchburg State (4-4, 0-3 LEC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Eastern Connecticut State University for a contest starting at 4 p.m. Bridgewater State (6-2, 2-1 LEC) will visit Westfield State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
