Keene State Blanks Fitchburg State, 2-0

Valentin and Linane combine to stop 18 shots for Falcons in conference setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Junior Sami Smith registered a pair of tallies as Keene State College defeated Fitchburg State, 2-0 in Little East Conference field hockey action this morning at Elliot Field.

In the first period of play, Keene State opened the scoring just five minutes into the frame as Smith collected a rebound off her own shot and tucked the ball inside the far post for her team-leading fourth marker on the season for the 1-0 lead.

The Owls doubled their lead (2-0) two minutes later when Smith capitalized on another rebounded shot. Smith collected a loose ball on the left side of the cage, following a shot by sophomore Casi Smith at the top of the circle and slipped a shot into the back of the net for her second marker of the contest.

Following the break, Fitchburg State nearly broke its scoring silence at the 67:13 mark as freshman forward Molly Richard and junior midfielder Madeline Hoffman registered back-to-back shots on target, but freshman goaltender Gwendowlyn Thayer turned away both shots.

Throughout the contest, Keene State controlled the offensive front, out shooting the Flacons, 31-6, while also holding a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners. In the cage, the duo of senior Judith Valentin and freshman Brittany Linane combined to stop 18 shots for the Falcons, while Thayer and senior Meaghan Dwyer combined for three saves over the course of the contest.
