Eastern Connecticut Rallies Past Fitchburg State, 2-1

Richard notches team-leading sixth goal for Falcons 

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Fitchburg State field hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State in Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey action at the Mansfield Complex this afternoon.

Following a scoreless first half of play, Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 38:13 mark as freshman Molly Richard gathered a feed from classmate Maggie Gallagher and found the back of the cage for her team-leading sixth tally on the season for the 1-0 lead.

Eastern Connecticut knotted the score (1-1) in the 47th minute of play when senior Mackenzie Bower slide a pass over to sophomore midfielder Alex Kallgren, who fired a shot inside the far post for her team-best seventh goal on the year.

The Warriors took the lead roughly five minutes later as senior forward Brianna Passero collected a loose ball in front of the cage and wristed a shot into the left side of the cage for her third marker of the 2015 campaign to make the score 2-1.

The Falcons nearly retied the game in the final minutes of action when junior Madeline Hoffman put a pair of shots on frame, but Warriors keeper Maddie LaRusso denied both scoring chances, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Throughout the match, the Warriors held a commanding 18-7 advantage in shots, while also holding a 13-6 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Judith Valentin finished with five saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while LaRusso stopped three shots for Eastern Connecticut State in 70 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (4-7, 0-6 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Framingham State University at 10 a.m. Eastern Connecticut State (6-4, 4-2 LEC) will host Salem State University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
