Gimenez collects team-leading ninth tally for Falcons in non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Senior forward Julia Gimenez notched the lone goal of the contest as the Falcons of Fitchburg State defeated Roger Williams University, 1-0 in non-conference field hockey action this evening at Elliot Field.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 4:32 mark as Gimenez gathered a feed from newcomer Molly Richard and blasted a shot inside the far post for her team-leading ninth tally on the season for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons nearly doubled their lead midway through the frame when Richard and junior Madeline Hoffman put back-to-back shots on target, only to have Hawks goaltender Mya Lunn turn away both shots to keep the score at 1-0 going into intermission.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued to press as Gimenez and sophomore Kerra Anastasia put shots on frame, but junior defender Alexandra Baxter cleared both attempts off the goal line with a pair of defensive saves, resulting in the 1-0 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State controlled the offensive play, holding a 26-6 advantage in shots, while also finishing with a 9-4 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, freshman Brittany Linane made a pair of saves, en-route to the complete game shutout for the Falcons, while Lunn stopped 12 shots for the Hawks in 70 minutes of action.
