Fitchburg State Falls To Fourth Seeded Eastern Connecticut State, 2-1

Richard notches team-leading 12th goal for Falcons

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Fitchburg State field hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the fourth seeded Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State in semifinal round action of the 2015 Little East Conference (LEC) post-season tournament

In the first half, Fitchburg State took the lead at the 10:55 mark as freshman forward Molly Richard converted a penalty stroke, lifting a shot into the upper far corner of the net for her team-leading 12th tally on the season for the 1-0 lead going into the break.

Following intermission, Eastern Connecticut State knotted the score (1-1) in the 50th minute of action when senior Briana Passero collected a rebound of the stick of sophomore Alex Kagren and deposited the ball into the back of the cage for her ninth goal of the season.

The Warriors grabbed the lead at the 53:26 mark as Kagren gathered a feed senior Hannah Keiser and wristed a shot inside the far post for her 12th score of the 2015 campaign for the 2-1 advantage.

The Falcons nearly retied the score in winding minutes when Richard and sophomore Bailey Miller each had quality scoring chances, only to both shots sail just wide, resulting in the 2-1 final. With the victory, Eastern Connecticut State (13-6, 8-3 LEC) advances to Saturday's LEC Championship Game as it travels to the third seed Owls of Keene State, while the Falcons conclude their season with an overall record of 11-9 and a 4-7 mark in conference play.

Throughout the contest, Eastern Connecticut State finished with an 18-12 advantage in shots, while the Falcons held a 10-7 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Judith Valentin stopped six shots for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while junior Samantha Scavo made two saves in 70 minutes of action for the Warriors.
