Fitchburg State Falls At Keene State, 4-0

Linane stops 14 shots for Falcons in LEC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey team was in action this afternoon, suffering a tough 4-0 setback to Keene State in Little East Conference (LEC) action at the Owls Athletic Complex.

In the first half, Keene State grabbed the lead at the 8:22 mark as senior forward Sami Smith received a feed from junior Brittney Cardente and fired a shot into the back of the cage for her eighth marker on the season for the 1-0 advantage going into the locker room.

Following the break, the Owls doubled their lead (2-0) in the 40th minute of action when Smith wristed a shot inside the far post off an assist from sophomore Julia Babbitt for her second score on the afternoon.

The hosts upped its margin roughly eight minutes later as senior Erica Shaffer deposited the ball into the left side of the cage for her fourth goal on the season to make the score 3-0 before Smith completed the hat trick at the 53:28 mark, blasting a shot inside the near post for her third tally of the contest, resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the match, Keene State finished with a 28-9 advantage in shots, while also holding a 20-3 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Brittany Linane stopped 14 shots for the Falcons in 65:11 minutes of action, while senior Gwendolyn Thayer made six saves for the Owls, en-route to her third win on the year.

Fitchburg State (2-1, 1-1 LEC) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Colby-Sawyer for a contest starting at 4:30 p.m. Keene State (4-1, 1-0 LEC) will host Amherst on Wednesday for a 6:30 pm start time.
