FIELD HOCKEY NOTCHES LEC VICTORY OVER SOUTHERN MAINE

Fitchburg, Mass. –  The Fitchburg State University field hockey team erased a one-goal deficit with two unanswered goals in the second half to rally past the Huskies of University of Southern Maine 2-1 in Little East Conference play on Wednesday evening at Elliot Field.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 2, University of Southern Maine 1
Records: Fitchburg State (6-4, 3-2 LEC) | University of Southern Maine (5-5, 3-2 LEC)

How It Happened

After a scoreless first half, the Huskies broke the stalemate three minutes into the second frame. Junior Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine) threaded a through pass to an open Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine) who tucked the ball into the left corner for the 1-0 lead.

The Falcons battled back to even the score just six minutes later. With heavy pressure in the offensive end, senior Maggie Gallagher (North Attleboro, Mass.) drove a big ball into the circle from the right wing that found the stick of Aislinn DeHorsey (Leominster, Mass.) for the junior's sixth goal of the season.

The Green and Gold forged a 2-1 lead at 53:51. DeHorsey collected her own rebound off an initial shot off Huskies goaltender Lindsay Pych (West Milford, NJ) and found a wide open Nicole Tocco (Gloucester, Mass.) on the weak side for the Falcons first lead of the game. It was Tocco's fifth goal on the year.

Inside the Numbers

Freshman Abby Bryant (Ware, Mass.) notched three saves for her sixth win of the season for the hosts, while Pych posted three save in the loss.

Southern Maine held the advantage in corners (11-2) and shots (9-7).

This evening's contest marks the 37th meeting between the two teams in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons currently 11-25-1 all-time when taking on the Huskies.

Fitchburg State has won the last four matchups with Southern Maine, including a 2-1 last season at Elliot Field.
