Sousa nets first collegiate tally for Falcons in non-conference setback

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Pilgrims of New England College this afternoon at Elliot Field as the Falcons opened their 2019 season.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State grabbed a 1-0 margin 9:28 into the first period as freshman forward Sophia Sousa (Dartmouth, Mass.) collected a feed from classmate Maddison Arpano (Lunenburg, Mass.) and struck for her first collegiate tally.

New England College knotted the score (1-1) in the 25th minute of play when freshman Makenna Platte (Manchester, N.H.) redirected a shot off the stick of fellow freshman Sophie Yandow (Swanton, Vt.).

Following intermission, the Pilgrims took the lead at the 32:31 mark as graduate student Brittany Tierney (Ottawa, Ont.) connected on her first goal of the year off an assist from freshman Neve Demarest (Templeton, Mass.) for the 2-1 edge.

New England College tacked on an insurance marker in the 52nd minute of play with junior Zoe Pedler (Springfield, Vt.) registered her first score on the season, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest marks the 18th matchup between the two schools in field hockey with the Falcons 11-6-2 all-time when taking on the Pilgrims.

Fitchburg State had won the last two meetings with New England College, including a 5-1 triumph last season at the Don Melander Field.

Sousa netted her first collegiate tally for the Falcons.

New England College held a 16-4 margin in shots, while also holding a 9-4 edge in penalty corners

In net, freshman Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.) stopped nine shots for Fitchburg State in the setback, while counterpart Ellie Philben (Havre De Grace, Md.) made one save to earn her first collegiate win in goal for New England College.
