Lamprey notches first collegiate victory for Fitchburg State in non-conference victory

New London, N.H. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team defeated the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College, 4-2 this afternoon in non-conference action from Veitch Field.

How It Happened

Colby-Sawyer took a 1-0 lead at the 6:07 mark of the first period as senior forward Alie Jones (Cape Neddick, Maine) fired a shot into the back of the of a feed from junior Julia Lanctor (Sandown, N.H.) for her first tally on the year for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) in the 21st minute of action when senior Nicole Tocco (Gloucester, Mass.) collected a pass from freshmen Lena Spadafore (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Sophia Morse (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and tucked the ball inside the near post.

The Falcons grabbed a 2-1 advantage with just under two minutes left in the half with sophomore Sarah Craig (Winchendon, Mass.) gathering a loose ball in front of the net off a shot by newcomer Grace Kerr (Holliston, Mass.) and found the back of the net for her first goal on the year.

Following the break, both teams traded scores as sophomore Chrissy Coffield (North Conway, N.H) notched a score for Colby-Sawyer, while newcomer Sophia Sousa (Dartmouth, Mass.) collected the goal for Fitchburg State to make the score 3-2.

The Green and Gold upped its margin at the 50:59 mark when junior Sophia Laperle (Auburn, Mass.) struck for her first tally of the 2019 campaign off assists from classmate Chloe Gladu (North Reading, Mass.) and Spadafore, resulting in the 4-2 final.

This afternoon's contest marks the fourth matchup between the two schools in field hockey with the Falcons 3-1 all-time when taking on the Chargers

Fitchburg State has won the last three meetings with Colby-Sawyer as the Chargers earned a 3-1 triumph last season at Elliot Field with former Falcon registering the lone goal for the Green and Gold

Spadafore registered her first two collegiate points with a pair of helpers for the Falcons.
