Raymond nets two goals for Green and Gold

Salem, Mass. – The fifth seed Falcons of Fitchburg State suffered a tough 4-3 setback to the fourth seeded Vikings of Salem State this evening in quarterfinal round action of the 2023 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Field Hockey post-season tournament at Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Salem State opened the scoring at the 5:59 mark of the first period as freshman Claire Fallica (Acton, MA) gathered a feed from senior Mikayla Mason (Beverly, MA) and deposited a shot into the lower right corner for her second tally of the season for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score at 1-1 15 seconds later when sophomore Sophia Yates (Woodstock, CT) redirected a pass from classmate Autumn Tibbetts (Lunenburg, MA) into the right side of the cage for her fourth goal of the 2023 campaign.

The Falcons answered again with four seconds remaining in the frame with junior Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, MA) slipping a shot into the lower right corner for her second score on the year off an assist from sophomore Olivia Narkevicius (Phillipston, MA) for the 2-1 edge.

The Vikings retied the contest at 2-2 in the 19th minute of action as Alexia Hamilton (Burlington, MA) found the back of the cage for her first goal on the season. The Green and Gold took the lead back just before halftime with Raymond tipping home a shot off the stick of Yates into the upper right corner for her second goal of the contest for the 3-2 margin going into the break.

Following the intermission, Salem State tied the contest (3-3) in the 38th minute of play when graduate student Ashley Yebba (Everett, MA) connected on her second tally on the season. The Vikings rallied to secure the victory at the 44:58 mark with newcomer Allison Thomas (Carver, MA) tucking a shot into the left side of the cage for her third score of the 2023 campaign, resulting in the 4-3 final.
