Salem State Shoots Past Fitchburg State, 90-76

Ingram Rubin leads all scorers with a game-high 32 points

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 1, 2014) – The Salem State men's basketball team used a 47 point second half to post a 90-76 MASCAC victory over the Falcons of Fitchburg State University this afternoon at the Recreation Center.

With the victory, Salem State improves to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in the MASCAC while the Falcons fall to 1-16 on the year and 1-6 in the conference.

Salem State used a balanced attack with four players hitting double figures. Junior Jon Perez (Weymouth, Mass.) led the way with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while classmate Bryan Ortiz (Salem, Mass.) added 19 on the afternoon. Junior Nick Grassa (Lynn, Mass.) was strong beyond the arc, nailing five three's for 18 points, while Andrew White (Medford, Mass.) finished with ten points and three assists.

For the Falcons, senior Mike Ingram-Rubin (Boston, Mass.) led all scorers with 32 points, shooting 9-of-25 from the floor and 5-of-12 from three point range. Senior Mo Molin (Brockton, Mass.) was also solid with a double-double effort of 16 points and ten boards, while freshman Josh Ferreira (N. Dighton, Mass.) was solid with 12 points.

Fitchburg State held strong throughout much of the first half, trailing only by five as it entered the break, but Salem State came out roaring in the second frame, going up by as much as 22 throughout the period.

The Vikings were strong all game, shooting 52.7% from the floor (29-of-55) and 47.8% from three point range (11-of-23). Salem was hot throughout the second half, with 60.0% shooting from beyond the arc, while Fitchburg State connected of 5-of-13 attempts throughout the period.

Fitchburg State controlled the boards with a 42-36 advantage and 16-7 margin on the offensive end, while Salem State cashed in with 34 points in the paint and 14 points off turnovers.  

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Framingham State at 8 p.m.
