Falcons Soar Past Eagles, 90-61

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State University shot 56.5% from the field in route to a 90-61 victory over Daniel Webster College on Tuesday evening at the Recreation Center on the campus of FSU.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-3, while the Eagles fall to 3-5 on the year thus far.

Fitchburg State kicked off the contest on an 8-0 run, while never relinquishing the lead for the remainder of the game. The hosts spread their margin out in the opening stanza by as many as 18 on two occasions before Daniel Webster went on a 15-5 run over the final six minutes to cut the lead to as low as seven.

Freshman center Maurice Greene picked up his missed free throw and drove to the basket for a buzzer-beating layup for the double-digit advantage for the Falcons going into halftime (47-37).

In the early minutes of the second half Daniel Webster was able to cut the deficit to three on four consecutive foul shots by freshman guard Chris Doane.

The teams traded baskets back and forth before Lee's fast break layup gave the Green & Gold a double-digit advantage for good at 11:42, which grew to as high as 31 points in the closing period.

The Falcons were led by junior guard Keyon Armstrong with 18 points, while classmate Anthony Muccioli chipped in with 16 points – shooting 5-6 from beyond the arc. Junior forward Kwame Lee registered his second career double-double, draining 17 points with 10 caroms.

Khial Watson had a strong night for the Eagles despite suffering the loss, as the junior guard scored a game-high 25 points, shooting 5-7 from downtown, 8-11 from the floor overall, and six rebounds. Freshman guard Chris Doane contributed with 14 points in the losing effort.

Overall, FSU shot 56.5% (30-53) from the floor, while going 47.4% (9-19) from the perimeter. Daniel Webster countered with a 35.8% (19-53) from the field and went 6-22 (27.3%) from the three-point line. Fitchburg State held a 37-32 edge in rebounds, while outscoring the Eagles 26-12 from the paint.

The Falcons will return to the hardwood on Thursday as they host Salem State in their first conference tilt of the year at 7:30 pm. Daniel Webster will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to NCAA DI foe Yale at 7:00 pm.
