UMass Boston Clips Fitchburg State, 88-83

Four Falcons reach double figures for Falcons in non-conference setback

BOSTON, Mass.- The Fitchburg State University men's basketball team was in action this evening, dropping a tough 88-83 decision to the Beacons of UMass Boston in non-conference action at the Clark Athletic Gym.

Fitchburg State opened the game on a 10-3 run on a three pointer by senior Kwame Lee and a layup from sophomore Josh Bosworth, while junior Jaleel Bell sank three shots from the free throw line as well as a layup just three and half minutes into the contest.

The Beacons responded with an 8-0 run of its own as senior Michael Campbell knocked down a  pair of jumpers before junior Kevin Louis-Jean and a layup from sophomore Maurice Magras to take its first lead of the contest at 11-10.

The next seven minutes of the first half was a back-and-forth affair, which featured nine lead changes and four ties, before UMass Boston took its largest lead of the half (40-32) sparked by Campbell's eight points.

The Falcons ended the half on a 9-2 run, keyed by a pair of jumpers from senior Givaughn Jones and three pointer and layup by junior Lance Hill to reduce the Beacon's lead to just two (40-38) going into halftime.

Following intermission, the Green and Gold regained the lead (48-45) three minutes into the frame on a layup by Lee before senior guard Quadry Allen buried a shot from beyond the arc to put the host back on top at 50-48 with 16:08 remaining.

The back-and-forth battle continued through most of the second half with seven ties and 11 lead changes. With the score knotted a 83-83, the hosts ended the contest on a 5-0 run on an and one opportunity by Allen and layup from junior Dan Powers, resulting in the 88-83 final.

The Falcons were led by Bell with 16 points, six boards, three assists and four steals, while Bosworth added 15 points, six rebounds and two assists. Lee and Jones were also solid for the visitors, chipping in with 14 points each.

For UMass Boston, Cambell posted a double-double of 24 points and 12 caroms to go along with seven assists and four steals, while Power added to the mix off the bench with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four assists, three steals and one block.

Fitchburg State (3-3, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Engineers of MIT for a contest starting at 3 p.m. UMass Boston (2-1, 0-0 LEC) will host Southern Vermont College on Friday in first round action for the 31st annual UMass Boston Harbor Invitational at 4 p.m.
